[ Sherlock was used to seeing people be put off balance by what he says. He didn't strive towards it, the individual was really irritating.

Loki wasn't the latter. No. The man was becoming more of a mystery, the more Sherlock saw.

His back stiffens just a fraction as the other begins his pacing. Otherwise, he hardly seems fazed, eyes instead directed straight in front of him.
] To prove what? Your worth? But that seems too simple for you, too mundane for someone who holds themselves at such a high standing.

[ A brief pause, and a quirk of his brow. Something of an amused sound, as he finally turns, sharply, to face the other man again. ] But given the way you dress -- assuming the extravagance is compensating for something -- maybe it is as simple as showing you're worthy of approval.[ Perhaps he was reaching on the insecurities bit. But he was also certain he must be getting something right.

What stuck out at him is the fact that the man was completely comfortable in clothes even Sherlock would essentially deem odd.
] And naturally, you're not going to tell me if I'm wrong or right.

[ Eyes narrow. ] You're enjoying this? Why.

[ oh and what would Loki assume about Sherlock? This was definitely turning into an interesting game. ]
rockofages: (Loki: pleased grin)

Will do! Not sure how to though. Loki will figure it out. Hows this?

[personal profile] rockofages 2012-06-14 03:35 pm (UTC)(link)
[He was getting riled up, twitchy even, in his own way. The signs were small but distinctly there and pleasing to Loki.]

And gauging from your earlier assumptions, you'd put that approval...

[He doesn't finish the sentence, stopping his pacing with a chuckle.]

Naturally not. Why ruin your chances, hm?

[Loki rocks back, spreading his hands wide again.] Why not? Such effort to solve a riddle, such work to figure things out. I admire the use of ones mind and you do it well.

[The grin takes a sharp edge.]
The name you gave me is a lie but close enough to be a comfortable one. [He hums.]Family... I assume Holmes at least is your name.

And you're a man that values above all intelligence and find those around you sorely lacking. You're as arrogant and as proud as I am and with good reason considering how easy it is to read everyone around you like an open book. The world to you is predictable, boring because everyone misses the clear and obvious, but does that put them beneath you?

Mayhaps not but their sentiment is tiresome at best.

So you fall to challenge, setting your mind to mysteries that no one else can solve, not from kindness but a desire put your mind to work.

[He gave an amused snort.]

A detective perhaps, unless that is the incorrect word.

[ A sharp smile and he resumes his pacing.]

[ Sherlock's first immediate reaction, a reflex, is to fix him with a glare.

There was something unsettling about how the grin changed, and it sent another wave of suspisions down his spine.
] The name you gave me wasn't right either.

[But what he said then impressed Sherlock as much as it unnerved him. Correcting people who called him a psychopath? That was simple, reflexive.

But this? He was pinned down, while he mistakedly thought he was doing the pinning.

His glare is maintained, following the man before he sticks out his hand.

[The look he gets, it's as natural a reaction as breathing. Loki cants his head to the side as a nod.]

No, it wasn't. But you knew that from the start.

[Everything in Sherlocks posture, his face his eyes gave away the truth. No one had ever read him so throroughly in return. He doesn't like losing, or having his world rearranged, Loki surmised. He glanced down at the hand and back up to Sherlocks face.]

A pleasure, Mr Holmes. [He takes the hand, his fingers cooler than they shoulder be a shakes once, grip firm.]

Of course. [ He takes a breath in and holds it, shoulders squared.

His eyes drift down when the other takes his hand. He's noting the coldness of his fingers. Colder than average.

Anemia? No. He doesn't look frail enough for that level. A blink, and his pale eyes flicker back to Loki's face.
] I'm sure.

[ Then, he lifts a brow. He's maintaining a collected air, even though he doesn't like this.

He isn't seeing something about this man. Some very crucial, very important detail. But what.

Makes both of them. And whilst on edge, he was by no means about to lose.
]

Your hand. [ He's almost carefully choosing his words now, thinking, trying to catch anything he hasn't seen before. ]

Your temperature is colder than average. My first go to would've been anemia, or some form of iron deficiency. Less likely the latter, considering how well groomed you are. A vitamin deficiency would almost be embrassaring, wouldn't it?

Leaves anemia from other causes. Blood loss? Or genes? [ He makes another pause. Another inhale. ] You use the science of deduction. All that tells me is that you're one of the lucky few to posses a higher level IQ, and intelligent enough to know how to use it.

Refreshing, however it tells me little else. [ a beat, before he falls silent, narrow-eyed again.

He knows there's an integral part to this man. A part that will explain everything else. He simply needs a bit more time to find it.

[It was never anything but. As if sensing Sherlocks determination, Loki's eyes gleam.]

Yes? [Genes struck close to home but no where close enough to make Loki uncofmortable. This mortal had no idea did he? So grounded in his earthly knowledge as he seemed to be.]

You compliment me, Mr Holmes. Might I add, I was sincere when I said this has been a pleasure thus far. It is rare to cross paths with one so clever. [There's something in his tone that implies that he's not quite clever enough perhaps. A little note to goad the other along.]

He sees a flicker. Genes? It had something to do with his genes? It was barely even acknowledged, and the man was definitely comfortable still but -- what could it be?

Oh, oh that tone. There's a clench in Sherlock's jaw. He makes no effort to hide that.
] I'm missing something. Something vital to your very being, but what.

[ he can't venture into anything supernatural, because that doesn't exist but --
Wait.

[ The clothes, the way he carried himself. That superiority complex...
A head tilt to the side.
] You think you are one--

you're delusional.

[ What was wearing thin was his patience. He had good control over himself, a solid grasp, though he also had the smallest, tiniest urge to throttle the information out of the other man.
If only to see how the other acted. Sherlock realized enough about the other to say that that won't work in terms of information, but it might give him some more understanding...

There's a barely, barely noticeable flinch at the change of expression, and the lightest twitch of the lips, again.
] But which god...

[ The walking dead was entirely different problem, one Sherlock deemed considerably less interesting than the one at hand. even how they ended up here had been shoved to the side.

and yes, he considered this man a problem. A problem that needed solving.

There's a newfound rigidity to his spine as he bristles, as the other invades his personal space.

But it's not like Sherlock is going to back away either. His eyes don't move from the man's.

He cants his head lightly to the side, a brief movement, and a more confident flicker of a smirk.
] Well, since you asked.

Gods aren't human. Their superior. Implies superior skill, and all that nonsense. [ a beat. His tone lowers, but given their proximity, he knows the other will hear. ] Gods aren't supposed to bruise, are they?

Yes, which?

[The way his bristles is a delight to Loki, but he holds his ground. Brave. Bold, yes. He wondered if it was courage or the simple fact that he did not believe. The smirk is a warning and his eyes shine with excited glee.

When the other strikes out, Loki catches his fist and retaliates, planting his hand in the others chest and giving a shove that even on his weakest day, could break rock.]

HE REALLY IS :| and thanks for the link! :3

[personal profile] speculates 2012-06-14 07:14 pm (UTC)(link)
[ Sherlock was stubborn; it was one of those characteristics that jumped out at you. Therefore, if he wanted to figure something out? He would. And would push until he did.

Or in this case, he came to realize that it might have been him being pushed.

He blinked, winced as his hit was caught, but the real shock came a second later.
It felt like a freight train just crashed into his chest.

He staggers, goes down. It's hard to breathe, and momentarily, it's hard to even focus as his vision blurs, brightens and the ringing in his ears gets louder.

But it's his pride that forces him to move, albeit to rise to one knee, to somehow level himself slightly, as he tries to recover a breath. Air. To stay conscious.

His lifts his face upwards. If looks could kill, Loki...

Was he afraid? No, though he supposed he should be. But fear was an irrational emotion. Sherlock has felt fear before, but not for his life. But anger, anger was a far more controllable emotion, and one he would gladly let show. He will not cower in front of this man. No. That would bring the other too much satisfaction, won't it?

So instead, he glares.

Was this even possible? It can't be -- can it? Who was he? Some sort of failed experiment like H.O.U.N.D.?

Or was there even the slightest possibility this man wasn't delusional at all...

Another attempt at breathing. It's painful.
] Who -- what -- are you?

[ Give him a few seconds, he might try and stand.]
rockofages: (Loki: smile/charm)

No worries!

[personal profile] rockofages 2012-06-15 05:01 am (UTC)(link)
[Loki releases Sherlocks arm when he stumbles back. No crack, no real damage, just winded. He sighed, irritated at the way this place held him back.

He meets Sherlocks gaze with an amused smile of his own, pleased to have sparked a reaction where the other failed. Proud, arrogant, stubborn, angry. Was this man also childish in his anger?

But there was defiance too. No fear, which if anything endeared Sherlock to him. Oh what Loki wouldn't give to have the sceptre returned to him. This man, this clever man could prove so useful. So entertaining and such fun.

]

Ah, ah. But that would end the game wouldn't it? [He laughs a little more watching the other struggle to simply breathe.]

You've got all these clues, my clever Holmes. Can you put them together? [He says, offering his hand to help Sherlock stand.]

[personal profile] speculates 2012-06-15 11:39 am (UTC)(link)
[ well, it was lucky for Sherlock that this one had his powers limited. Not that he knew it, but if the hit was a tad harder? There would've been that disgusting sound of cracking bone.
His jaw set, as he could finally take a deep inhale, stare unwavering.

The game was still on.

His eyes flicker over to the offered hand. Generally speaking, it would've been easier to accept it. Would've been easier to actually get up, to stabilize himself with the help. But it would be adding insult to injury. And Sherlock's own ego couldn't afford said insult.

So he rises on his own, avoiding the hand on principal. His movement is still unsteady, and there's an unpleasant rasp in his throat. And yet he straightens, spine stacked

A flinch in the form of a blink, a twitch of his lips. 'my clever Holmes'. It almost made it sound like if the other man could, he would have his control over Sherlock. It set him on edge.
]

The name you gave me. Luke. It can't be far from the real name, given how high you value your own being. So, gods whose names start with 'L'. Isolating anything from Christianity, no offense. Disregarding any minor gods-- and before you say so, thats not a complement.[ his eyes narrow again, head tilting as he scans the other over.] Lugh, the Celtic solar deity. Or Loki, the trickster god.

Luke is closer to Loki. Your skin is colder, which would techinically fit the myth of you being son of Laufey. [ he pauses, before adding, for the sake of his argument, and perhaps maintaining his grounded view of the world:] All hypothetical, of course. You could have had precise defense training.
rockofages: (Loki: pleased grin)

[personal profile] rockofages 2012-06-15 02:54 pm (UTC)(link)
[He watched the other stand, refusing the hand Loki offered. Oh very good, very good indeed. Proud, stubborn, defiant and willing to dig in deep for what he wants.

If Sherlock wnated to keeping playing, so would Loki.

Listening to the others reasoning, arching a brow at reference to Christianity, smirking at the dig at Minor deities.

The reference to Laufey however makes his smile grow cold and hard. Well then.]

But of course, purely hypothetical.

There is no way a god of any kind could exist in your stable little world where the rules are known to you and you are the best player. [Another chuckle before he pauses, looking Sherlock over with an intense kind of speculation.] One wonders though, how well you could bear having those rules broken?

speculates: ({ smug)

<3! I know I've said this before but uggu I'm loving this so much.

[personal profile] speculates 2012-06-15 03:38 pm (UTC)(link)
[ An exhale. Well, at least right now, breathing wasn't exactly...boring.

But as said earlier, once Sherlock enters a game, he won't just back off without even some form of victory.

At the hardening smile, he can't help arch a brow, suddenly willing to let that smugness of his surface.

He realized this man (?) could actually hurt him, but push for push? Nevermind the fact that Sherlock was getting some sort of thrill from this game, despite all his glares, and even discomforts.
] Did I hit a nerve, Loki?

[ But that self-assurance is quick to waver at the inquiry Loki offers. He peels his gaze away, instead for a brief moment casting a glance around them. At the very least, there was no sight of the undead.

He swallows.
] Precisely. If gods existed, it would a completely different world. Science would be answered with miracles, and logic would hardly be useful when everything can be explained by simply blaming -- or calling -- to the so-called higher powers.

[ a beat.] It's ridiculous. [ though there's another pause, as he directs his attention back to the other. A snort. ] And let me guess. You're going to take a go at breaking those rules.

[ the diversion is used only to keep himself from focusing too much on the possibility. Though their entire situation was already pushing it. The walking corpses? Though truth be told, not even Sherlock could know his reaction if what he was certain of about his world was suddenly....wrong. Doubt was not something often felt. He'd like to keep it that way. ]
rockofages: (Loki: Ooh/totheside)

[The smirk, did he think himself victor now that he guessed Loki's name.]

Not a nerve.

[A lie but it was no matter. He see's the tiny falter, the swallow.]
Magic and science? Are they really so different? The application of knowledge put into practise so that we may see the world anew.

You assume the gods care to answer you.

[Loki grins. Why should he attempt to show what he could conjure, weakened as he was when pushing the other intoa corner was so much fun?]

Running from the idea, are we? Is it really that bad to find you were wrong? [Loki sets his hands behind his back.] Is it not said that knowing how little you know is the best way to understand all?

[ in this case, it was small victories at a time. ]

Of course not. [ its a quip back as his tension does not recede. ]

Magic is an impossibility. [ can he really afford to think otherwise without compromising his comfort?] The world needs precision , facts. Its made of equations and connections and links, even if most are too dull to see them. Why should I believe differently?

[ A mild scowl. ] I don't assume the "gods" care, because there are none. If they existed, I would know. [ such confidence in his abilities. ]

[ he doesn't answer the last questions. He was running, but he wouldn't admit it, would he now? And yes, it would be so bad to be wrong.] I know what is relevant to my needs. I don't claim to know everything. I see, remember, acquire new data--

[ he cuts himself off , choosing to take another diversion. Another idea.] Can you prove it then? What you are. [ perhaps if he tempts him--

He steps forward, closer, on the edge of invading Loki's space.

[Loki smiles, mad gleeful joy in his eyes. How hard will you cling Mr Holmes?] Can you say you know how a thing works or how it would not when you are utterly ignorant of it?

[His grin grows sharper.]

And how would you know of this?
[He didn't need to admit, Loki knew well enough that he was scrambling for whatever purchase he could find. The shift in gear doesn't surprise Loki, the tactic was often his to use though he did it with far more elegance. The look he gives Sherlock is almost affectionate.]

As you wish, Sherlock Holmes. [He lifts his hand a gently touches his fingers to the others temple, quickly summoning what magic he could.]

Don't forget to breathe. [Loki casts his spell with a flex of his fingers sending memories, all the images, sensations, sounds and smells of Asgard, the AllFather, Thor, the Bifrost, Jotunheim and Midgard in it's infancy. All the things people would recognise from his myths.]

Because I -- [ he had replies, retorts, more quips and rushed phrases ready on the tip of his tongue.
But how did this man see right through him? Through his stoic demeanor, picked at his doubt.
At first, his brows draw together at the look he receives. Endreament - the word passes through his mind, and his own expression shifts to that of confusion, suspicion, irritation all at once. But when he senses, more than sees, the rising hand, his reflex is to cant his head back slightly. Away.

He flinches at the cold touch.

Images. There's a rush of them, of things that look like memories, feel like memories even if they defy all logic -- they're played within his mind. It's an overload, an assault to his senses and he numbly realized why Loki reminded him to breathe --

Because he couldn't. Eyes firmly squeezed shut as his own hand jerks up to the other's, closing around the wrist as he attempt to drag it away from -- to make the rush stop.
But that thought, of wanting the connection to be broken only lasts for a moment. Whilst his grip doesn't fall away, eyes snap open as he forces himself to take in a gasp. Pupils dilate, he stumbles.

What did he just see?

It was just the slightest touch away from being too much. Too much to accept, too much to understand. There was no device, no human who could communicate images like this but --

It was also on the brink of thrilling. If he could show him this, what else could be shown?
]

That was -- [ what do you know. You've stumpted him speechless. His response is a stare. There's a spark of doubt, disbelief, awe within it.

Loki watches impassively as his memories assult Sherlock, the mortal struggling to handle the impressions filled his senses. He smiles, approving with a hungry grin when the other doesn't break away, but sees.

He lets go and watches patiently as the other stumbles, speechless and in awe. There's a certain high to having that effect, to breaking the barriers of anothers world and there and then he rides the high.]

And the high is far greater than anything else he has tried. It could easily become an addiction.

His gaze flares. The moment of hesitation -- he should be cautious, he shouldn't be so brash -- passes quickly. There is a possibility of seeing more.

He is driven by the urge to understand and is almost derailed by the question.
