[ oh, look, caroline seems to be all put together-y. she seems like a good person to ask. ]

So. What do we think the availability of haircare products and hot showers is like in the zombie apocalypse?

[Caroline's the only one with a curling iron here, okay? she's got her shit down.]

Not good but I'm so going to find a way.

Evil Dead, I can handle. Sacrificing hygiene seems like it's just adding insult to injury.

[ ok so they are sharing a bunk during a zombie apocalypse. this is super comfy and not at all nerve-fraying in any way, shape, or form. they've both dealt with plenty, haven't they?

elena still can't sleep. every creak, every scuttle of sound outside -- ]

Caroline? You awake? [ her voice is so, so much more put together and unafraid than she feels. ]

[caroline's next to her, having the same problem that elena is except multiplied by vampire-ness.] I can't sleep.

[risks]

[ thank god. not thank god, but thank god she's not alone with her insomnia. the sheets rustle and the bed whines slightly as elena turns towards caroline in the dark. she should say something. something comforting.

somehow, she can't manage it for a dragging silence. she's moved past "it's going to be okay" and "how is any of this possible?" quickly today. now her words dissolve into a soft, weighted exhale.

she reaches out blindly to touch caroline's arm. ] We'll get through this.

[coy]

I know. [she says it in a small voice, her arm moving to wrap around her friend.] We're going to be okay. [elena doesn't need to be the one who has to be strong, caroline can do it too.]

[risks]

[ she smiles, barely. maybe caroline can see it in the shadows the way elena can't. still, she squeezes the arm beneath her fingers gently in answer as well. "okay" has always been relative with her, with them too; why should that change too, just because everything else has been ripped apart and flipped on its head? ] We always are. [ it's said sadly, but with strength of plenty conviction. ]

[coy]

[their version of okay is not really anyone else's version of okay. okay means they're alive, surviving, breathing (sort of).] Always. [caroline sighs softly, her heart aching for those who aren't okay, that didn't make it, that are lost to whatever this thing is. she's going to fight to make sure elena never feels that way.]

[risks]

[ it's a little too late to stop her from feeling that way. to stop them both, elena thinks, her eyes dropping from seeking out caroline's. always is a long time. she's not sure she believes in always anymore, if she ever did, but she'll believe in it until she's proven wrong, and many times besides. for caroline. for herself. to survive and make it through. her eyes flick back up. ] We should get some sleep.

[coy]

[her eyes meet with her friend's before she closes her eyes, sighing again.] We should but can we? [her eyes open up again.] Weirdest slumber party ever.
